Cliff Sterrett Polly and Her Pals Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 6-13-34 (King Features Syndicate, 1934). "Your eyes can dance to it," says the cartoonist-historian Art Spiegelman, likening Sterrett's art to early-day jazz. This risqué example of Sterrett's mastery finds grumpy Pa Perkins flabbergasted over his voluptuous daughter's shrunken attire. (The gag anticipates one of Chic Young's most memorable Blondie punch-lines: "I've seen more cotton in a bottle of aspirin," says Dagwood Bumstead of his daughter's bathing-suit.) Polly and Her Pals represents a pinnacle of Art Deco style in the comics. This piece carries the additional pedigree of a famous exhibition, 1977's The Cartoon Show, at the Art Museum of the City of Sacramento. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. The image area measures 25" x 5.5", with a framing to 29.25" to 10.5" Aside from a deep age-toning in the art and some frame-scuffing, the selection is in Very Good condition.
