Description

Claude Shafer The Doodlebugs Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 7-20-18 (Cincinnati Post, 1918). Shafer's whimsies once were so popular that parents would nickname their kids "Doodlebug." The artist balanced this recurring series with sports cartooning and WWI-related illustrations. This splendid, oversized example depicts a goofy golf tournament, with approximately one joke or visual gag per square inch. The signature appears on a paste-over slip of paper (lower right), which obscures an earlier drawing announcing: "Big doings next week." Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 20" x 13". Moderate toning, light marginal soiling, and marginal pinholes. Very Good condition. From A Collection of Great Cartoonists and Illustrators.
