    Description

Chester Gould Dick Tracy Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 4-8-56 (Chicago Tribune, 1956). This large-scale gem contains the very beginning of the classic "Flattop Jr." case, from a peak period for Gould's celebrated crimebuster feature. The artist had killed off the original Flattop in 1944, but longtime readers had called for a return engagement -- hence the villain's murderous offspring. Here, fugitive punk Joe Period is saved from capture by a teenage hoodlum who introduces himself: "My Dad was Flattop." He also entraps policewoman Lizz Worthington in a flooded vat. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. The page comprises a montage of panels, arranged in tiers. Image area, 27" x 18.25". Scattered adhesive staining. Very Good condition. From the Ray Edw Collection.
