Chester Gould Dick Tracy Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 12-12-45 (Chicago Tribune Syndicate, 1945).
Sadistic creep Itchy Oliver whops captive Detective Tracy with a rolled newspaper -- a choice moment of spontaneity. Gould improvised much of Tracy in Real Time (often indulging violent impulses) the better to keep his readers alert. "If I don't know what happens next, then neither will they," Gould told comics historians Michael H. Price and George E. Turner during the late 1960s. Tracy hints at a Spoiler Alert when he informs Itchy: "When we leave ... I'll walk out, but they'll be carrying you." (Bonus element: Itchy's accomplice is the surviving gun moll of an earlier Tracy villain, B-B Eyes.) Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 19.5" x 6". Toning and handling wear commensurate with age. Very Good condition. From the Ray Edw Collection.
