    Description

Charles "Doc" Winner Tubby Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 8-30-23 (United Feature Syndicate, 1923). The first comics kid named Tubby was not that pesky neighbor in the Little Lulu series -- he came later. Winner's Tubby takes pride-of-place as a worthy example of schoolboy humor, right up there with Gene Byrnes' Reg'lar Fellers and Ad Carter's Our Friend Mush. This example of Tubby is a small gem of Existential anguish, confronting the kid with an insult cruel enough to wreck his fighting spirit. Even worse -- the tin can he kicks just happens to contain a brick. Winner pursued parallel careers -- as both a name-brand cartoonist, and as a ghost-artist and assistant on more prominent features including Elzie Segar's Thimble Theatre (Popeye) and Billy DeBeck's Barney Google. Ink over graphite on triple-thickness Bristol board. Image area, 19" x 6". Pronounced age-toning and marginal adhesive staining. Very Good condition.
