Billy DeBeck - Original Comic Strip Art for Barney Google Daily, dated 12-3-31 (King Feature, 1931). Barney Google first appeared in 1919 in a strip awkwardly titled "Take Barney Google, F'rinstance". The strip had a slow start and DeBeck was actually only doing it until he could pursue his "true calling" with a career in fine arts. However, a few years later the strip suddenly took off with the introduction of the race horse character called Spark Plug. DeBeck continued to work on the strip until his death in 1942, additionally creating the character Snuffy Smith for the strip. This strip is an excellent example of DeBeck's brisk use of the crowquill pen with a cross-hatched approach to shadow and texture. It measures approximately 5.5" x 18.25" and is in great condition with minor staining in the outer boarder areas.
