Description
Billy DeBeck Barney Google Daily Comic Strip dated 8-29-31 (King Features Syndicate, 1931). Barney Google had come long way since its début in 1919. The racehorse character known as Spark Plug had jolted the feature into high gear, and by the 1930s DeBeck would follow through with a junior horse called Pony Boy. A rivalry between horses lent further momentum. In this dark-themed episode, conniving Barney Google proposes to exercise Pony Boy by hitching him to the rear of a moving railroad train. Also appearing is Google's Black-stereotype assistant, a stable-hand named Sunshine. Here is an excellent example of DeBeck's brisk use of the crow-quill pen with a cross-hatched approach to shadow and texture. Ink over graphite on Bristol board, with selective knife-blade scratching to achieve white-on-black highlights. The placement of blue-pencil shading lends almost a 3-D effect to the extensive use of white-space backgrounds. Dimensions, 18.25" x 5.5".
