Description

Bill Holman Smokey Stover Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 2-20-38 (Chicago Tribune-N.Y. News Syndicate, 1938). Smokey Stover has his poor chief literally jumping through hoops in this madcap Sunday, crammed with the visual gags and pun-heavy antics that defined the strip. Creator Bill Holman peppers his trademark "foo" throughout the panels, a nonsense word that went on to inspire WWII pilots to dub UFOs "foo fighters", and later gave a certain rock band its name. Ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 19" x 12.75". Toning, frame shadow, foxing, staining, smudging/soiling, adhesive residue, corrective abrasions, edge creasing, and handling wear. In Very Good condition. As a bonus, the lot includes a half-page tear sheet of the published strip.
