Description

Bill Freyse Our Boarding House with Major Hoople Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 9-22-41 (NEA Service, Inc., 1941). Frumpy Martha Hoople, the boss of Hoople Manner no matter what her husband the Major says, has received a beauty treatment -- and is none too happy with the results. Glamorous boarder Juliet (who administered the treatment) sympathizes with Martha's discomfort, but Major Hoople turns on the compliments. Here, we learn Martha's maiden name (Rathbun) and her place of origin (Kentucky). Major Hoople appears to have one hand stuck in a crock, a term that might also apply to his attempt at flattery. Freyse, early in his long run as the official Major Hoople artist, uses Juliet to inject an element of loveliness into the ensemble cast in contrast to the majority of un-lovely characters. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 12" x 11". Light toning and handling wear, with a glue-stained copyright bug (lower left). Very Good condition.
