    Description

Basil Wolverton Steve Grover of the Stratosphere Patrol Episode #9 Unpublished Comic Strip Tryout Original Art (1938). A rarity among rarities -- part of Wolverton's seminal warm-up for the imaginative Spacehawk comic-book serial of the 1940s. Driven to seek comic-strip syndication, the artist concocted a dozen Steve Grover episodes, which served primarily to land him a comic-book offer: Hence Steve Grover's three-issue run in Spacehawks (appearing in Circus -- the Comic Riot), and successive features leading gradually to Spacehawk (in Target Comics), about a heroic loner as opposed to the heroic teamwork of Spacehawks. The present selection boasts Wolverton's wonderfully dense pen-stippling (that's not Zipatone film) and bold, rubbery linework. Ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 10.5" x 10.25". Lightly toned and in Excellent condition.
