Description
A.W. Mackenzie Mackenzie Editorials Opinion-Panel Comic Strip Including Stalin and Franco Original Art Group of 3 (New York Post/Mirror, 1943 et Seq.). Mackenzie seldom hand-dated his opinion-page pieces, but he gave one of this batch an explicit 12-21-43 designation -- a helpful bit of context for his razz against the Nazi military machine. Elsewhere in this splendid batch of wartime razzberries, the artist takes a sarcastic swipe against Soviet Russia's Joe Stalin and equates Spain's Generalissimo Franco with a rattlesnake. No chance of misinterpreting Mackenzie's editorial stance. Ink over graphite, with occasional blue-pencil strokes and white-paint retouching, on pebble-grain Coquille board.
