Alex Raymond Tim Tyler's Luck Partial Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 10-1-33 (King Features Syndicate, 1933). Before creating the Flash Gordon comic strip that debuted on January 7, 1934, King Features Syndicate staff artist Alex Raymond assisted Lyman Young on Tim Tyler's Luck. It's been noted that by 1932, Raymond was in fact ghost artist on both the daily and Sunday installments, turning it "into one of the most eye-catching strips of the time," according to comics historian Maurice Horn. Save for the "1933" year written on the back, this jungle adventure strip is undated, however three of the panels appear to be the original art for panels that were copied and published in the strip on 10-1-33. It clearly shows Raymond's style; our hero even looks like Flash Gordon in panels four and five. The art is in ink over graphite on Bristol board, with an approximate image area of 25.25" x 10", and is matted and framed open-faced to an overall size of 27.75" x 12.25". The Alex Raymond signature in panel five is an attached piece, but it does appear to be hand-written, and not a print. There is a vertical stain that runs through two panels, with some additional stains along the right side, and the board has tanned, but Raymond's brilliance shines through these minor distractions. Good condition.
