    Description

Alex Raymond Flash Gordon Sunday Strip Original daté 07-07-40 (King Features Syndicate, 1940).
Alex Raymond Flash Gordon Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 07-7-40 (King Features Syndicate, 1940). Classic and unique Flash Gordon by the master of the medium, Alex Raymond. Dale is imprisoned by the Emperor Ming on the planet Mongo. Flash makes an attempt to rescue Dale and nearly loses his life as Ming has set a fiendish trap. Just as disaster is about to befall them, Flash is rescued by a mysteriously garbed liberator. It turns out to be a Power Man, one of the engineers that maintain the power grid on Mongo. The Power Men are willing to help Flash and give him one of their "uniforms," so that he can infiltrate the palace. Dale, again imprisoned, anxiously waits to see if Flash will attempt another rescue. Dale is conflicted as she knows that Ming has positioned his mysterious Death Ray toward anyone foolish enough to enter the area. In this outstanding example, we see a scantily attired Dale. Flash disables the monstrous device and bursts into the cell and Dale's waiting arms. Of historic note to those that appreciate comics, as well as strip art, the images of Flash in a red costume with a lightning bolt logo on his chest cannot be a coincidence. The similarity to comics silver age, Flash is undeniable. Just as interesting is the similarity of the Alex Raymond costume, and poses to the contemporaneous, Lou Fine character Electro (later Dynamo) and The Ray from Fox Comics. Both characters first appeared prior to this Sunday. However, the similar poses appear in issues later, begging the question, who was reading and following whom? The image area is a glorious 19.5" x 15.75". In Excellent condition. From the Alex Raymond Family Collection.
