Description

Alex Raymond Flash Gordon Sunday Comic Strip (Used to Create a USPS 1995 Comic Strip Classics Stamp) Original Art dated 8-28-38 (King Features Syndicate, 1938). During the inspired period of 1936-38, Raymond brought the quality of heroic romance on Flash Gordon to its all-time high. His superb drybrush inking and figure drawing on this episode rivals that of such celebrated "hall of fame" illustrators as Matt Clark and John LaGatta. This gorgeous piece features peerless portraits of the two main characters, Flash Gordon and Dale Arden, with General Lin-Chu, and in the last panel here, Flash's arch-nemesis, Ming the Merciless. Beyond the comic strip, in 1995, the USPS used the iconic portraits of Flash and General Lin-Chu from panel two to create a 32-cent stamp for Comic Strip Classics, making this one of the most-widely circulated and popular images in the entire history of action-adventure comic strips. This ink on Bristol Sunday, a magical touchstone for any fan of American popular culture, has an image area of 24" x 19.5" (and matted to an overall size of 31" x 27"). The artwork has had some professional restoration, which included backing the art with archival paper; there is light overall paper aging with a repaired rip in panel four, leaving the art in overall Very Good condition. This magnificent masterwork from the Golden Age of newspaper comics is sure to be an ultimate showpiece for any sci-fi/fantasy comic art collector. A sheet of the Comic Strip Classics stamps is included with this lot.
