Alex Raymond Flash Gordon and Jungle Jim Sunday Comic Strips Original Art dated 11-19-39 (King Features Syndicate, 1939). Alex Raymond was solidly into the height of his vast artistic power at this point! The figure work here is simply stunning. From that gorgeous panel featuring Lil in the Jungle Jim topper strip, straight through to Fria's supple and well-lit form in the bottom tier, this is some high-octane Raymond art. It's matched by an equally exciting story as well, with Flash near death and a jealous love-triangle being all that separates him from the medical aid he so desperately needs. It's from the "Ice Kingdom of Mongo" story arc. It's worth noting that Flash Gordon was an obvious influence on George Lucas' Star Wars. You don't have to look beyond Fria's hair style and the fact they are on an Ice Planet to see some similarities with this strip! Created in ink over graphite on two separate illustrations boards. The Jungle Jim strip has an image area of 24" x 11", and the Flash Gordon measures 24" x 19.5". Both strips have some toning and handling wear. The Flash Sunday has minor spot stains in Panel 3, and part of the syndication strip is missing. The Jungle Jim piece has some creases in the marginal corners, and the top paper layer is starting to separate a bit. Both are in Very Good condition. From the Alex Raymond Family Collection.
