Description

Alex Raymond Flash Gordon and Jungle Jim Sunday Comic Strips Original Art dated 5-23-37 (King Features Syndicate, 1937). Alex Raymond was still using his much sought-after dry brush technique when this Sunday hit the newspapers in 1937. Both Flash Gordon and Jungle Jim were just over three years old at this time. They were created specifically to compete with Buck Rogers and Tarzan respectively. This Flash Gordon episode was part of the "Beast Men of Mongo" story arc, and this Sunday leads to the great war on Mongo, pitting Ming the Merciless against his son-in-law, his own daughter, and their allies. Beautiful images of Flash, Dale Arden, and Prince Barin stand out on this work. Rendered in ink over graphite on illustration board. The Flash Gordon piece has an image area of 20" x 15.75". The Jungle Jim Sunday has an image area of 20" x 9.25". Both have toning and edge/corner wear. There are production registration paper strips affixed to the margins. There is a missing text correction paste-up in the Jungle Jim strip (leaving glue residue), and the first part of the syndicate strip is missing. Overall these are in Very Good condition.
From the Alex Raymond Family Collection.
