Description
Alex Raymond Flash Gordon and Jungle Jim Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 9-17-39 (King Features Syndicate, 1939). Flash Gordon, created by Alex Raymond in 1934, holds a significant place in the history of narrative art. The character and its accompanying universe became iconic, influencing numerous other creators and setting standards for the genre. Flash Gordon's journey on the mysterious planet Mongo, where he encountered a variety of characters, creatures, and kingdoms, showcased Raymond's imaginative storytelling along with his artistic prowess. That combination contributed to the strip's enduring popularity, making it a timeless classic. Raymond's influence can be seen not only in the works of many contemporary artists, but in generations of artists who followed in the ensuing decades. The early years of Flash Gordon were characterized by Raymond's clear line approach, with its distinct, easily recognizable style. As Flash and his comrades explored new kingdoms on Mongo, Raymond's artwork seemed to evolve to reflect each new setting. By 1935-1936, Raymond began incorporating dry brush techniques into his inking. This shift in technique added depth and lushness to the visuals enhancing the atmospheric effect. Subtle changes came seemingly year by year, as the art became slicker, with exquisite figures drawn from models providing a level of dynamic realism never before seen in the medium. The period beginning in 1939 with the introduction of the Ice Kingdom of Frigia is one of the most popular among Raymond aficionados. The size of the original art increased with the effect of accentuating the beautiful ruler Queen Fria, as well as the fierceness of the Frigian Giants and the fantastic creatures of the kingdom, including the glacier monster.
This remarkable example features Flash, Zarkov, and the monster demonstrating his awesome power. The new-to-the-market work of art is direct from the Raymond family. Other examples from 1939 have realized more than $300,000 in previous Heritage auctions. The Jungle Jim topper companion strip features Jim and Kolu in the last panel. The Sunday strips were created in ink over graphite on illustration board sections with a combined image area of approximately 24" x 31". Toned, with handling wear, they are in Very Good condition.
From the Raymond Family Collection.
