Description

Alex Raymond Flash Gordon and Jungle Jim Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 10-8-39 (King Features Syndicate, 1939). In this exciting strip from the classic "Ice Kingdom of Mongo" storyline, Flash saves the small band of heroes; however, Count Korro is embarrassed in front of the whole Frigian army! This 13th Flash Gordon storyline has long been a fan favorite, and the artwork for this Sunday is simply breathtaking. It's interesting to note that Fria's "side bun" hairstyle makes her look remarkably similar to Princess Leia in the first Star Wars movie. Whether this strip served as inspiration or not, Raymond's strip undoubtedly influenced the iconography of American science fiction.
The original "topper" companion strip, Jungle Jim, is also included in this lot. They are created in ink over graphite on illustration board. Jungle Jim has an approximate image area of 24" x 11" including the top masthead with collectible stamp art (but no title), while the Flash Gordon art measures 24" x 19.5". Both artboards are toned, and are in Very Good condition.
