Description

Alex Raymond Flash Gordon and Jungle Jim Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 1-27-35 (King Features Syndication, 1935). Prince Barin steps in just in time to save Dale from a deadly fate, in this spectacular Sunday, a prime example from the third storyline, "Tournaments of Mongo," one of the most desirable periods of Alex Raymond's run on the strip. With one glance you can tell how much Raymond's art on Flash Gordon (particularly this Sunday) influenced the up-and-coming artists about to change the world of comics with cape-wearing superheroes. This famous installment is known among Comic Art scholars as the Egg Sunday, due to the unusual oval panel in the middle of the page. The art is in ink over graphite on illustration board that has been split, with both the art and reverse side of the board affixed to a sturdy backing board. This Flash Gordon strip has an image area of 25.5" x 20.25"; there is some minor handling wear in the outer borders, but the overall condition is Excellent.
In addition, the original "topper" companion strip by Raymond, Jungle Jim, is included, and it's a real corker! Check out that second panel, with Jim diving into water within a volcano crater -- does he remind you of any particular "flying" superheroes from later-day comic books? Again, Raymond's influential artwork played a big part in the entire superhero genre, one that is still going as strong as ever today. Like the Flash Gordon strip, this Jungle Jim is in ink over carefully erased pencil lines, on illustration board that has also been split apart with both sides affixed to a backing board. Likewise, the art is in Excellent condition, with only minor handling wear in the outer borders.
This is by far some of the most impressive newspaper comic strip original art we've seen to date here at Heritage, and we've seen a ton of great pieces since beginning our Comics and Comic Art division in 2001.
