Description
Alex Raymond Flash Gordon and Jungle Jim #9 Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 3-4-1934 (King Features Syndicate, 1934). This was just the ninth Flash Gordon strip ever! Heritage has only ever sold one strip older than this!When he was asked to create an adventure strip to compete with Buck Rogers, Alex Raymond came up with Flash Gordon, a strip that not only competed with but eventually eclipsed Buck Rogers. Not content with just that, he doubled-down by creating an answer to Tarzan for a "topper" strip in Jungle Jim. Between them, the two would go on to become radio shows, movie serials, TV shows, movies, and comic books. The fantastic art of Alex Raymond would inspire cartoonists for generations to come.
This Sunday features Flash and Thun the Lion Man attempting to save Dale Arden from marrying Ming, the Merciless Emperor of Mongo! There are sword battles, dinosaur wrestling, and of course the crushing hands of the savage Thun.
Note that it's in this Flash Gordon Sunday that Ming the Merciless is mentioned for the first time in comics history!
Also included is the Jungle Jim topper.
Raymond's exciting layouts and crisp clean-lined inks make this a true joy to behold. The features were created in ink over graphite on separate Bristol board with an image area of 25.5" x 20" (Flash Gordon) and 25.5" x 12" (Jungle Jim). Signed in the last panel. Toned, with slight handling wear, and a small rip in the top left margin (not into the artwork). In Very Good condition.
