Albert Carmichael - Spare Ribs and Gravy Sunday Comic Strip Original Art, dated 8-18-12 (NY World, 1912). Fans of George McManus' wonderful art deco "clear line" cartooning style will be amazed at how closely artist Albert Carmichael has "appropriated" the McManus touch in this side-splitting Sunday. Carmichael also worked on the early comic strip laugh-riot, Rosie -- The Joy of New York Life around this time, and this Spare Ribs and Gravy Sunday may be one of his few surviving originals. To paraphrase an old saying, "One man's treasure is another man's trash." Spare Ribs and Gravy can scarcely believe their eyes when a giant diamond they've unearthed fails to impress the Queen of a remote kingdom. Spare Ribs and Gravy was a lampoon of the exploits of scientific explorers and these two adventurers were often caught up in hilarious cultural misunderstandings. The Sunday has an image area of 18" x 18" and aside from some mild signs of paper aging and edge wear, this early original is in Very Good condition.
