Description

Al Capp Li'l Abner Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 4-9-40 (United Feature Syndicate, 1940). Li'l Abner's 20 million avid readers (as of 1940) followed the strip as much for its suspense as for its boisterous humor. This lethal-lady episode is as suspenseful as they come: Villainous Lucretia Revel -- a ringer for Hollywood star Joan Crawford -- plots mayhem, using a knowledge of chemistry. The piece finds Capp well along toward becoming the most famous cartoonist in America. His drawing technique has reached a plateau of dynamic, character-rich brilliance. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 22" x 5.75". Toned, with marginal handling wear and light scuffing within the artwork. Very Good condition.

More Information: More about That: The "Lucretia Revel" storyline reappeared in 1944 in Tip Top Comics, United Feature Syndicate's key funnybook title, reprinting newspaper strips.
