Chester Gould The Girl Friends Daily Comic Strip Original Art (Chicago Daily News, Inc., 1931). Gould, a frustrated humorist, was just about to launch his grim cop feature, Dick Tracy, when this swan-song episode of The Girl Friends appeared. A precise day of publication is elusive, but documentation on the reverse pegs a delivery of the art in September of 1931 to an editor named Gentry Dugat in Dallas. (Tracy first appeared in October of 1931.) The irony here is that Dick Tracy, for all its gruesome seriousness, also allowed Gould to deploy the type of sarcastic wit that he had pitched in The Girl Friends. Not to mention the interest in feminine voluptuosity. This one is a jewel. Ink over graphite on Bristol board, with painted white highlights. Image area, 20" x 6". Uniform age-toning, with a deeper stain at Panel 3 (where the paste-in date had fallen loose). Very Good condition. From the Jack Kent Collection.
