Chester Gould Dick Tracy Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 7-14-40 (Chicago Tribune Syndicate, 1940). One crimebuster saga ends, and another begins: In this pivotal episode of the trailblazing policier, Gould sends homicidal Mamma Trohs away on a prison-bound train while Detective Tracy stumbles into a new case in the making. Mamma's slain husband, the diminutive Jerome Trohs (reverse for Short), lies scalded to death in a sheriff's car. (Tracy buffs revere Trohs as one of the earliest examples of Gould's trademark bad-guy grotesques, right up there with the maimed and mutilated Steve "the Tramp" Brogan [1932 and onward] and foreshadowing such better-known villains as Pruneface Boche and Flattop Jones). Meanwhile, the new villain, a charlatan known as Yogee Yamma, appears in the closing panels -- an ominous appearance for one of Gould's more impressive bad guys. Tracy originals from this period are among the most elusive, and this one appears in the authentic New York Sunday News tabloid dimensions (a primary showcase for first-run Tracy episodes), with the panels assembled by hand on a backing sheet. Ink on conjoined segments of Bristol board. Image area, 19" x 26". Some fill-in art completes the edges of the larger panel areas. There are elements of age-toning, adhesive staining, and soiling; otherwise, in Very Good condition.

More Information: Edit: To emphasize Jerome Trohs as an early example of Tracy's signature bad guys, and to place him in a chronologically arrayed context with earlier/later such characters...
