Chester Gould Dick Tracy Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 9-11-45 (Chicago Tribune Syndicate, 1945). B.O. Plenty had already become a popular favorite among Dick Tracy's supporting eccentrics -- but here, the smelly hillbilly is still one of the bad guys, squandering a fortune in stolen loot while his accomplice-turned-victim, Breathless Mahoney, has barely survived an attempted strangling. Meanwhile, Breathless' criminal mother rants from a nearby jail cell. Gould usually killed off his signature villains, but B.O. Plenty had become too appealing a presence to croak: This story-arc contains the beginnings of his conversion to a goofy backup character. (The term B.O. was a popular euphemism for body odor, often used in advertising for deodorant products.) Ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 20" x 6". There are two missing paste-ups, one leaving glue residue in Panel 2. A horizontal line has been drawn through the bottom of every panel as a guide for newspapers that wished to run the strip at a smaller size. The age-toned board is in Very Good condition. From the Ray Edw Collection.
