    Description

C.D. Batchelor Herr Doktor Editorial Comic-Strip Panel Original Art dated 2-24-40 (New York Daily News Co., 1940). Savage commentary, here: A Nazi soldier rejects a medical treatment on grounds that the remedy "is non-Aryan in origin" and might cast doubts upon his loyalty to Hitler. Pulitzer Medalist Batchelor at his acrid, ironic best, on a par with his famous war-as-harlot cartoon of 1937. Ink over blue pencil on Bristol board. In a cryptic inscription at lower right, Batchelor congratulates Warner Bros., the movie studio, "for a great film and a great courage." The allusion may be to either of Warners' war-drama movies of early 1940, The Fighting 69th and British Intelligence. The reverse contains a similarly intense bonus: A rough-sketch satire involving a game of poker among Axis and Allied powers. Image area, 14" x 19". Excellent condition.
