Carl Barks Scrooge's Old Castle Painting #21-72 Original Art (1972). After his introduction in Four Color #178's "Christmas on Bear Mountain" story, Uncle Scrooge stepped out for his first real starring role in his second appearance, Four Color #189's "The Old Castle's Secret." This monumental issue was graced with Barks' very first comics cover, and that wonderful cover provided the inspiration for this painting, with one notable change: Uncle Scrooge has joined his nephews Donald, Huey, Dewey, and Louie. Artist Tony Strobl had included Scrooge on the cover when the story was reprinted in 1964 (in Best of Donald Duck and Uncle Scrooge #1), and the fan who commissioned this painting paid an extra premium to have Barks do a similar version. We're certain that original fan was more than pleased with the results, as Barks perfectly captured that feather-raising moment at old Dismal Downs Castle when the mysterious phantom wields an ancient sword. This 36th Duck painting is the only version of this scene rendered on Barks' preferred Masonite rather than canvas, and the result is a rich, detailed painting, which features an image area of approximately 16" x 20". This rare treasure still rests within the original frame hand-picked by Carl Barks, which measures 23.5" x 27.5", and is in Excellent condition. "The Old Castle's Secret" remains one of the all-time favorites by many Disney fans; if it's your favorite as well, this beautiful painting is essential for your collection!
