Carl Barks Sailboat Donald Duck Painting CB-OIL 19 Original Art (1972). The image of Donald Duck with nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie from the cover of Walt Disney's Comics and Stories #108 is a classic. When Carl Barks finally received permission from the Disney Company to produce oil paintings based on his comic book Duck art, this was the subject of his very first painting, with seven more versions to follow; this the second of those. The painting was done expressly for a neighbor of Barks; when asked which image he preferred to be used as a subject, this friend and neighbor told Barks to pick his own favorite Donald Duck cover. It's a real beauty, one that has never been offered for sale before. The consignor told Heritage that this painting "has been pampered by me since 1972. Being fond of the coloring and detail, I never displayed it where it would be exposed to bright lights... I allowed the frame to be dusted but never let anyone touch the painting itself. The only exception was to allow the photography of the painting when Disney's Fine Art of Donald Duck was published."
The painting truly does mesmerize the viewer, with rich foreground colors in the waves, and delicate shading on Donald and the boys. It's in oil on Masonite, approximately 14" x 18", framed without glass for an overall size of 20" x 24". The back of the Masonite board is visible on the reverse side, displaying Barks' own number for the painting, #4-72. The painting is in Excellent condition.
For the ultimate Carl Barks/Donald Duck/Disney fan, this may be the chance of a lifetime to own one of Unca' Carl's own personal favorites. We're certain the new owner will treasure it as much as the original recipient has loved it all these years.
