    Description

Carl Barks Lost in the Andes Painting Original Art (1973). Carl Barks did hundreds of duck stories during his career, which have spread the great cartoonist's fame around the world. His 1949 classic "Lost in the Andes" from Four Color #223 has become not only one of the most popular among fans and collectors, but this famous story of the "Square Eggs" was also one of Barks' own personal favorites, created during what he considered the peak year of his artwork.
This masterpiece of comic art features in its story both Donald as a museum employee, years before the same idea was used in "The Golden Helmet," and a land hidden below the frozen mists of the Andes mountains, years before Barks used a similar locale in the Uncle Scrooge bottle-cap adventure "Tralla-La"! It's also fitting that this story is cover featured in the first volume of the new deluxe American reprint edition series of Barks' Duck stories, being published by Fantagraphics.
Barks only painted two recreations of this comic book's iconic cover, both as 16" x 20" oil paintings on Masonite. Offered here is the earliest version, technically titled "The 8-Cornered Eggs" (#9-73) on the reverse side of the painting, but reverted to its original title "Lost in the Andes" on the nameplate, and known to fans under the number CB OIL 48. It's in Excellent condition, in an ornate frame that measures approximately 23.5" x 27.25".
While Barks' "money bin" paintings have sometimes been described as the artist's most popular, in his great 1971-1976 period, Barks painted by request more Donald Duck covers than any other images. Perhaps the most famous image of all belongs in your collection: the gorgeously hued Square Eggs of 1949, "Lost in the Andes"!
