Carl Barks Flying Dutchman Painting Original Art (1972). Carl Barks based his epic 1959 "Flying Dutchman" story from Uncle Scrooge #25 on the old legend of a phantom ship off the coast of Africa in the Atlantic, whose glowing, ghostly apparition was the sign of impending doom for any ship that crossed its path. Heady stuff for a Disney comic book aimed at children, but Barks was not the typical carefree "funnybook" cartoonist many of his contemporaries at Dell Comics were; his Duck characters often faced exciting, life-threatening danger. Barks created a total of three versions of this unforgettable scene in 1972 (with one not finished until 1991). This is the third and best-known version, referred to by collectors as CB OIL 25, and listed by Barks as 72-25; it was featured in the book, The Fine Art of Walt Disney's Donald Duck by Carl Barks. The painting is in oils on Masonite, measuring 24" x 18". It has been beautifully matted and framed without glass in a heavy, ornate wooden frame, with an overall measure of 39.5" x 33.5", and is in Excellent condition.
