Carl Anderson Henry Daily Comic Strip Original Art undated (King Features Syndicate, 1930s). Norwegian-American artist Anderson affects a Texas drawl in inscribing this fine piece to "Texas Jack" Kent, a schoolboy fan who would grow up to become a famous cartoonist in his own right (with the strip King Aroo). A minimalist gag feature that foreshadowed the tone of Ernie Bushmiller's Nancy, the pure-Anderson Henry reserves the right to turn edgy without notice: This example finds Henry suspecting the local butcher of turning dogs into sausage. The authentic Anderson strips from this Depression-era period are scarce, inasmuch as the originator (by now, around age 70) soon turned over the chores to a succession of assistants. Anderson's line was easy to mimic, but his gagwriting was sui generis. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 26.25" x 6". Excellent condition. From the Jack Kent Collection.
