Bud Fisher Mutt and Jeff Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 6-4-23 (H.C. Fisher, 1923). Augustus Mutt and Othello Jeff are the comics' first friendly-enemies team -- pals, though constantly at odds. This oversized example illustrates the prevailing tensions in terms of pure, unashamed slapstick. Fisher kept the jovial antagonisms at a high pitch, the better to keep his readers coming back for more, day after day; the strategy made him one of the comics' earliest millionaire talents. Two dates are handwritten, noting 6-4-23 and 6-28-23. One date may indicate an appearance in the British ancillary market, following the U.S. début. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Dimensions, 29.25" x 8.5". Peripheral edge wear and marginal creasing/staining. Very Good condition.
