Bob Lubbers Long Sam Daily Comic Strip Original Art Group of 10 (United Feature Syndicate, 1957-60). Capp, as writer and art director, takes top billing on these early examples of an essential feature in Lubbers' maturation as a comics-master. Capp had prior claim on the byline in light of his greater prominence as author/artist on Li'l Abner. Lubbers' fluid and earthy artwork dominates the exploits of an innocent beauty who becomes involved in one bizarre dilemma after another. (Lubbers also worked on Li'l Abner). Long Sam is the partners' riposte to Voltaire's Candide (1759), which also has inspired such works of modern times as Roger Price's J.G., the Upright Ape, Terry Southern's Candy, and Harvey Kurtzman's Little Annie Fanny. Preliminary penciling appears on one flip-side. Ink over graphite on Bristol board, with image areas averaging 19" x 5". Average Very Good condition. From the Estate of Bob Lubbers.
