Bob Addams Judge Magazine Gag Illustration Original Art (Judge Publ., 1903). "I thought he was on the water wagon," observes a sober rooster of a drunken Chanticleer (center). A mother hen is aghast, but a delinquent chick appears favorably impressed. Addams' pun-driven gag epitomizes his mastery at transforming various species into slapstick figures. The magazine's engraving stamp appears on reverse, with editorial notations and Addams' signature/address. Ink, ink wash, and watercolor over graphite on textured gray illustration board. Image area, 24" x 10.5". Awkward trimming at left and upper edges, with a moisture stain from top-to-bottom at right. Otherwise in Very Good condition. From the Jack Kent Collection.
