Billy DeBeck Barney Google Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 6-2-35 (King Features Syndicate, 1935). The influence of Fred Lasswell, DeBeck's Southern-bred assistant, dominates this early appearance by Snuffy Smith, hillbilly cousin of star player Barney Google. Lasswell had shared his rustic humor with citified DeBeck, and in Snuffy the artists found an ideal foil for Barney's big-town sophistication. This episode emphasizes Snuffy's wife, Lo-Wizie (later, Loweezy), who finds herself homesick for the backwoods during a visit to Manhattan. Ink over graphite on conjoined pieces of Bristol board. Image area, 20.5" x 16.25". Conspicuous age-toning and adhesive staining. Deteriorated lettering corrections, missing logotype, and white-paint corrections. Good condition.
