Bill Watterson Calvin and Hobbes Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 11-14-87 (Universal Press Syndicate, 1987). More rare than even a talking tiger, original art from Bill Watterson's much beloved Calvin and Hobbes almost never comes to market... especially an early strip from only the second year of the decade-long running series!
So much has been written about this beloved comic strip, and rightly so, as it pretty much breathed new life into what was widely considered a dying art form in 1985. The strip captured the kind of attention and devotion that only Charles Schulz's Peanuts had done before, at least since the 1930s-'50s Golden Age of newspaper strips when everyone, young and old, read and loved them. Sure, there have been some great humorous comic strips since that time, but nothing quite like Calvin and Hobbes, and there's really been nothing like it since Bill Watterson's decision to conclude the strip. Mr Watterson's desire to hang on to most of his art causes a panic among collectors any time an original surfaces, and we expect there will be many interested parties for this particular example.
The piece is signed by Watterson in panel two, and then personalized and signed again just under the image area. The artwork was produced in ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 12" x 3.75". There is slight tanning and frame burn to the art board; otherwise the art is in Excellent condition.
