Bill Gaines 1987 MAD Trip Book - Switzerland - With Art and Letters from the Usual Gang of Idiots Group of 17 Drawings and Letters (Bill Gaines Private Collection, 1987). Bill Gaines would often take groups of his employees, their spouses, and some friends on lavish trips and expeditions. As a way to repay their host for his generosity, and in true MAD fashion, they would bite the hand that feeds them by lampooning him and the trip with bombastic artwork and jokes to commemorate the trip. Gaines collected these into his private "Trip Books". These personal collections of tributes to specific trips have remained in the possession of family members, and the two offered in this sale are the very first two offered on the Market that we know of!
As such, the books are legendary in fan circles. Only in the absence of William M. "Bill" Gaines (1922-1992) could anyone outside the MAD inner circle gaze freely upon this ring-bound volume of private-stock cartoonery. The work is often raunchy, like a Friars' Club Roast in book form. Jack Davis' contribution in this collection is a savage exaggeration of Gaines' wheelchair-bound condition.
The first piece in this book (by Angelo Torres) gives the volume a title and sets the tone: "The Assault on the Matterhorn by The Gaines Expedition of 1987 (Better known as The Rape of Switzerland!!)
Other contributors include: Jack Albert, Al Jaffee, Joe Raiola, Paul Coker Jr., Tom Nozkowski, John Ficarra, Dick DeBartolo, Bob Clarke, Duck Edwing, Sam Viviano, Lou Silverstone, Mike Snider, Dave Berg, and also includes a photo collage by Annie Gaines. Varied media on bond and art-stock pages. Image areas, 8.5" x 11" (approx.). Excellent condition. From the MAD Collection of Annie Gaines Ashton.
