Bill Everett Cracked #1 Cover Original Art (Major Publications, 1958). It's a Cracked world! Cracked mazagine (sic) was the only real competition that MAD Magazine ever really had. There were several other imitators, but most did not come as close to replicating that peculiar flavor of zaniness as did Cracked. One of the ways they achieved this was by hiring some of the top talent in the industry at that time. Bill Everett, John Severin, Bill Ward, Russ Heath, Jack Davis... the list goes on. This incredibly detailed and gag-stuffed cover shows that Everett had the chops for this kind of low-brow comedy. Hidden in the art are caricatures of many famous people including Marilyn Monroe (towing playwright Arthur Miller on a rope), President Eisenhower, Marlon Brando, Jayne Mansfield, Hitler, Stalin, and Mussolini, and even Cleopatra. Although you don't see his face, the book's mascot, Sylvester P. Smythe, makes his first cover appearance here on issue #1. Produced in acrylic on Bristol board, the image area measures 12.25" x 16". It is tanned with staples in the margins, a small .5" rip in the right margin, and overall margin/edge wear. The biggest defect is that the top 3.75" was folded over backwards for a previous framing. This left a large crease and a difference in coloration. The folded back portion has corrugated cardboard lines on it from the frame backing. The piece is signed in the lower right image area and in Good condition. From the Cracked Vault Collection.
