    Description

Bernie Wrightson Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley's Frankenstein Front Endpapers Illustration Original Art (late 1970s). One of the books that is spoken of most reverently in the comic industry is Bernie Wrightson's Frankenstein. It was a labor of love that Wrightson started in 1975, producing illustrations at a steady pace for six years. Of all of the illustrations, this is one of the select few that gives a clear portrait of the noble but tortured soul that was known as "the Monster of Frankenstein". This is a rare opportunity to purchase a seminal piece from a major publication by an industry legend! There were only three landscape format pieces created for this project (the famous wraparound cover, and the back endpapers are the others). Even the unused pieces created for this project draw much attention and auction for a pretty penny, but this is one of the first images a reader would see when opening the publication, making it an iconic image!
One of the things that was so astounding about Wrightson's work on this was the intense and crazy amount of detail in most of the pieces. The cluttered and intricate background of the wraparound cover told fans they were in for a treat. But the insane amount of cross-hatching on this double-page endpaper design is every bit as mind-boggling! The ink is so thick that it has a texture and real depth to the work. The image of the lonely, isolated monster dramatically conveys the mood of the entire tale, and the masterful artwork itself is flawless. It's obvious that the "Master of the Macabre" was at his peak during this period. There is no whiteout in the image area... just a bit to clean up the edges in the margins. This stunning piece, from one of the undisputed highlights of comic and fantasy illustration history, was produced essentially "in one take"... no corrections or changes.
This soulful image is signed by Wrightson in the upper right of the 18" x 12" image area on the 20" x 15" illustration board. The board is lightly toned and in Excellent condition.
