Basil Gogos Famous Monsters of Filmland #13 Cover Painting Original Art (Warren, 1961). This incredible painting by Gogos for Famous Monsters was originally painted as a preliminary to show publisher James Warren what he could do with his first depiction of the monster from Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. Warren loved it so much he bought it as-is and put it on the cover of issue #13. The fans went crazy over it and collectors today continue to recognize it as Gogos' first depiction of the monster, with an impressionistic twist. Gogos went on to spread his talents to other fields of illustration, providing covers for paperbacks, magazines, comic books, trading cards, rock albums, and movie posters. During the 1960s to 1970s he became the quintessential FM cover artist eventually producing nearly fifty cover paintings, many of which have become iconic images from that period. Gogos' unique approach in painting was a technique of bathing his subjects in vivid colors coming from multiple light sources. His FM cover works were his favorite accomplishments because he loved the challenge of painting such unusual characters as both frightening and sympathetic. This painting certainly has all of those characteristics. Acrylics on illustration board; nicely matted with an opening of 9.5" x 11.5." Excellent condition.
