Art Spiegelman Snarf #7 Cover Original Art (Kitchen Sink, 1977). The Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Art Spiegelman (Maus) treats us to a pair of wooden-legged vaudeville comedians in this colorful cover to Denis Kitchen's Underground Comix anthology Snarf. In fact, everyone on the cover sports a wooden leg, including the line of dancers behind them and a "Pete the Pup" dog smoking a cigarette; even the on-stage easel holding a sign has a peg leg! Ouch! What craziness! Most of the art for Underground Comix, including covers, was created in black and white. Not only does important Spiegelman work rarely come to market, it is more rare to see a cover, and extremely rare to ever see a color cover. This is one of the few chances you will ever have at a color cover piece. It is an ink and mixed-media cover illustration is on paper or board and has an approximate image area of 14.75" x 19.75". It is matted and Plexiglas front framed for an overall size of 20.25" x 24.25". There's a tiny bit of smudging in the red masthead lettering, but the overall condition is Excellent. The art was prominently featured in the museum exhibit and hardcover catalog book Underground Classics: The Transformation of Comics into Comix, published in 2009. From the Eric Sack Collection.
