Alex Schomburg Marvel Mystery Comics #56 Cover Recreation Painting Original Art (undated). Golden Age Timely superhero comics were noted for many things, but just about every fan of the genre will agree that Alex Schomburg's busy, detail-heavy covers from the early to mid-forties were far and away the best in the business. They were fantastic creations that were chock-full of attention-grabbers, often with beautiful women (or kid heroes, or just about anybody) trussed-up and about to be tortured by evil Nazis or Tojo's blood-thirsty henchmen. Schomburg's cover for Marvel Mystery Comics #56, starring the Human Torch, was no exception, and as good as that cover was back in 1944, this incredible painted recreation goes it a step or two further, adding detail that would have been out of the frame of the original comic book. And trust us -- the images provided in our catalog and online, as good as they are, pale in comparison to seeing this massive piece in person. The art is in gouache and ink on board, with an approximate image area of 18" x 22"; the painting has been professionally matted and framed with Plexiglas for an overall size of 25" x 29". It's in Excellent condition, signed in the lower left. As much as we would love to keep this here at our auction headquarters to admire on a daily basis, it's destined to find a new home with one savvy collector's right bid. We promise that no matter what the final cost, it will be a bargain, and the centerpiece for any comic art fan's art collection.
