    Description

Alex Raymond Flash Gordon with Jungle Jim Topper Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 11-12-39 Group of 2 (King Features Syndicate, 1939). A full Sunday page full of original Alex Raymond artwork! Raymond's breezy style not only set the trend for this sci-fi series well after his departure, it really helped set the look for science fiction in general for decades to come. Check out that fantastic first panel of Flash running along the bottom of the stream-bed... great detail and panel arrangement paired with wonderful retro-future styling. This Sunday strip was titled "An Accident" and left Flash unconscious with a head injury. What a cliffhanger!
Also included is the companion strip, Jungle Jim. Although not the end of the tale of the Moon-worshipers cult, this episode at least puts an end to the threat on Stacey's life. As this was the "topper" strip for Flash Gordon, it also featured some "Save This Stamp" images of Fria (with her "Princess Leia" buns), and Dale Arden.
The two strips are produced in ink over graphite with red ink key lines on Bristol board with an image area of 24" x 19.5" (Flash), and 24" x 11" (Jim). The Flash strip is signed in the last panel, and then personalized and signed under the image area with the inscription "Happy Birthday to Jackie from her friend -- Alex Raymond". It is dated July 19th, 1940. The boards show light handling wear and some graphite smudges around the edges. There has been restoration work done on the Flash Gordon strip in the form of affixing it to a larger sheet of Bristol board to add paper to the chipped top and bottom edges, and there is a sealed rip on the lower left. This has restored it to Very Good condition. The Jungle Jim piece is in Excellent condition. From the Ethan Roberts Estate Collection.
