Alex Raymond Flash Gordon Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 4-21-35 (King Features Syndicate, 1935). A full-page example! This size was only used for a short time, and only a handful of originals are known to exist. "The years of 1935-1936 are considered Raymond's artistic peak" according to Jerry Weist. This was the time when he moved to the lush dry-brush technique that came to define his work. Here, Flash proposes marriage to Dale while they are on the Cave World when Azura, the evil Witch Queen of Mongo, suddenly appears. Raymond's depiction of beautiful women was the envy of every professional in the field, and you can see why here. Flash, in his winged helmet and cape, looks for all the world like a comic book superhero, but this page occurred a full three years before Action Comics #1 would introduce the world to caped mystery men. It's a fair guess to say Superman and all that followed owe a great deal to the heroics featured in Flash Gordon Sunday pages like this. The debut of beautiful but deadly Queen Azura was a high point in the strip; she would figure prominently in later episodes, as well as in the movie serial Flash Gordon's Trip to Mars, the 1979 Filmation cartoon series, and in the recent SyFy cable series. But it all begins with this breathtaking full-page Sunday installment!
The art is in ink over graphite on illustration board, with an approximate image area of 19" x 29.25". There is handling wear and corner damage (away from the image area), and the board has tanned a bit, but there are otherwise no distractions from the incredible power of this page. The art is matted and ready to frame and display as the centerpiece of anyone's Comic Art collection.
