    Description

Alex Raymond Flash Gordon and Jungle Jim Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 5-21-39 (King Features Syndicate, 1939). Flash and Queen Fria have tracked down the captured Dale and Prince Ronal to the Cave of the Giants in this exciting strip from the classic "Ice Kingdom of Mongo" storyline. This 13th Flash Gordon storyline has long been a fan favorite, and the artwork for this Sunday is simply breathtaking. It's interesting to note that Fria's "side bun" hairstyle makes her look remarkably similar to Princess Leia in the first Star Wars movie. Whether this strip served as inspiration or not, Raymond's strip undoubtedly influenced the iconography of American science fiction.
The original "topper" companion strip Jungle Jim, is also included with the Flash Gordon art, with both pieces held together in a 29" x 40" mat. The art is in ink and graphite on board; Jungle Jim has an approximate image area of 24" x 11" including the top masthead with collectible stamp art (but no title) and is missing one line of type in the first panel, while the Flash Gordon art measures 24" x 19". Both artboards were trimmed to the image area, and are in Very Good condition. From the Al Williamson Collection.
