Alex Raymond Flash Gordon and Jungle Jim Matching Sunday Comic Strip Original Art Group of 2 dated 1-21-34 (King Features Syndicate, 1934). We recently sold the matching set of Flash Gordon and Jungle Jim strips from 3-4-34 and were very excited to do so. Now we have the pleasure of offering the earliest matching set of strips ever to come to market. These were the third week of each strip. Either would be an incredible find, but a matching set this early is an almost unheard of treasure! The strips were created by Raymond to compete with Buck Rogers, and Tarzan, respectively. However, Flash did more than just compete... he surpassed Buck Rogers in both popularity and longevity. Of note from the Flash Gordon strip is that this episode is the very first appearance of Ming the Merciless (although his name was not used for some time yet). Check out the lovely detail in the monster in panel 2 and the ornate armor in panel 8. The back side has a note for the colorist that calls for the aliens to be colored blue. They were instead colored yellow. The Jungle Jim strip is matted with an extra panel (with glue residue and discolorations) that was previously pasted over the middle panel of the bottom tier. There is a paste-up (text-only) correction in the last panel as well. These two stunning strips are produced in ink over graphite, on Bristol board, with an image area of 25.5" x 12" (Jungle Jim), and 25.5" x 20" (Flash Gordon). They are matted and glass front framed. Overall they are tanned with some minor handling; however, in Very Good condition.
