Al Williamson - Flash Gordon Union Carbide Magazine Ad Introduction Page Original Art (King Features, 1970). In 1970, nostalgia for 1930s comic strip characters was big in America. Wanting to cash in on that trend, the Union Carbide company contracted Al Williamson to create a series of ads for national magazines like Life and Fortune, done in the style of the old-time comic strips. The results were nothing short of amazing. Here is the opening introductory ad for the series starring Flash Gordon. After Alex Raymond, no artist was better suited to draw the classic spaceman. Williamson was, at the time, drawing the Flash Gordon comic book for King, but these ads were certainly the most widely seen of all Williamson art. This page is drawn in ink over graphite on Bristol board, with an approximate image area of 13.5" x 18.5". Other than minor handling along the outer borders and a few very minor flyspecks, the art is in Excellent condition.
