    Description

Al Hirschfeld The New York Times Drama Section Original Art (NYT Co., 1940). Six Broadway-star caricatures in one immense composition. Here is Hirschfeld at a peak of accomplishment -- a unique document of the Broadway début of Emlyn Williams' The Corn Is Green, a semi-autobiographical drama of Wales' impoverished coal-mining populace. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Pictured from left are Mildred Dunnock, Edmund Breon, Rhys Williams, Thelma Schnee, Ethel Barrymore, and Richard Waring. An accompanying tearsheet is dated at 11-24-40, two days before the opening at the National Theatre. Inscribed to schoolboy cartoonist Jack Kent, who would grow up to become a celebrated cartoonist, himself, with the daily strip King Aroo. Ink and blue watercolor (shading) over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 24.5" x 13". Moderate toning and handlng wear. Very Good condition. From the Jack Kent Collection.
