    Description

Eugene "Zim" Zimmerman Judge Magazine Illustration Original Art (Judge Publ., 1890s). The master caricaturist had signed as Zimmerman during a hitch with Puck (an ancestor of MAD) but compressed his name to Zim upon moving to Judge, a similarly satirical publication. This example suggests a hobo's approach to a farming family -- whether seeking work or a handout, the artist leaves to the viewer's imagination. A curious cat (lower off-center) completes the scene. Ink over graphite on Illustration board. Like his contemporary T.S. Sullivant, Zim worked a strong influence upon the illustrative style of Pogo originator Walt Kelly. Affixed to the reverse of this piece is an engraving order for Judge magazine. Image area, 22.5" x 14.5". General toning. Slight cracking and tearing at right-hand corners. Excellent condition. From the Jack Kent Collection.
