I Choose You!, fans were introduced to Gary Oak, the archrival of Ash Ketchum, wherein Gary received his Water-type starter Pokémon Squirtle. It wasn't until episode 269, The Ties That Bind, that Squirtle evolved into its final form--Blastoise! The episode ended with Ash's Charizard and Gary's Blastoise ready to battle.
